CLEARFIELD – Joseph Jerry Knight, 79, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving daughter.
He was born March 8, 1937 in Clearfield, Utah the son of Clarence Joseph and Flora Ellen Lowham Knight. Jerry graduated from Davis High School in 1955. He received his Associates Degree from Weber College in 1960 and an additional degree in Small Business Administration in 1968.
Jerry married Lynda Hawks on September 16, 1960 in Ogden, Utah. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2001.
Jerry proudly served in the Navy, on the USS White Hurst destroyer during the Korean War.
He began working at his father’s auto salvage at the age of seven and worked there for 72 years, 45 of which he was President and Owner. He served on the National Retail Credit Association, was a member of the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce and did community service for the Kiwanis Club. He was also a notary, and a member of the Utah State Tax Commission. He was instrumental in the development of the Clearfield Freeport Center and Job Corps. He was a member of the LDS Church and had a strong belief in God.
Jerry’s big heart, enthusiasm for life, constant smile, and sense of humor was infectious to everyone around him. He loved his family, fishing, duck hunting, chariot racing, farming, and raising quarter horses. He could take apart and put back together anything with an engine. He loved helping others and having breakfast at the Corner Café and Sills sharing a cup of coffee with his friends.
Surviving is his daughter, Tracy Lin Knight, Clearfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret Lynda Hawks Knight, son Daren Joseph Knight, and sister Kay Knight Robinson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
