JOSEPH HOWARD RYTTING
LAWRENCE KS / LAYTON UT
J. Howard Rytting, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, KS, after a brief illness.
He was born June 12, 1942, in Rexburg, ID, the son of George and Maxine Bitter Rytting.
He grew up in Layton and graduated from Davis High School in 1960. He received a doctorate in physical chemistry from BYU in 1969. Howard was a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at Kansas University for 39 years. He was a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and Sigma Xi, and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutics.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a Bishop, Counselor in Stake Presidencies, Temple ordinance worker and a Seminary teacher. He served in the Helsinki, Finland mission from 1961-1964. Howard was a kind and gentle man, a devoted, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was known for his exceptional intelligence, humility, and diligence. He had a fervent testimony of the Gospel and lived his life accordingly. He touched many lives for good because of his great example.
He married Barbara Kay Smith on April 9, 1965, in the Salt Lake Temple. He is survived by his wife, 12 children; Barbara Moon (Todd) Providence, UT; Michael (Laura) Lindon, UT; Kiersten Armknecht (Richard) Lindon, UT; Rebecca Barnum (Karl) Parker, CO; Melinda Bash (Jeremy) Lawrence, KS; Heather Hogge (Doug) Hooper, UT; Erik (Tiffani) Copenhagen, Denmark; Cheryl Lee (Rick) Aurora, CO; Nathan, Emporia, KS; Megan, Madison, AL; Janae and Matthew, Lawrence, KS; 39 grandchildren; brother, Marvin Rytting (Susan); sisters, Linda Baer; Carolee Schofield (Jeffery) and Suzanne Montelongo (Gilbert Tony); sisters-in-law, Ann Rytting and Barbara Pratt; and brother-in-law, Jerot Joncas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Melvin and Marlow; sister, Sandra Joncas; brother-in law, Robert Baer. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 9, 2008 in Kansas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd.
The family suggests contributions be made in his name to the Howard Rytting KU School of Pharmacy Pre-Doctoral Fellowship or to the Humanitarian Aid of the LDS Church.
