Joseph Simpson

Joseph Glen Simpson passed away peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at his life-long home in Syracuse.

Joe was born July 3, 1927 the son of John George Simpson and Edith Elizabeth Hardy Simpson. He was raised on a farm and learned to work hard at a very early age. He attended Syracuse Elementary, North Davis Junior High, and Davis High School.

He married his eternal sweetheart, Louise Cook, on August 13, 1948 in the Logan Temple. They raised six children and have 29 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

Toward the end of World War II, at age 16, he left home and worked at Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego helping to build B-24 bombers. As soon as he turned 17 years old, he signed on to the U.S. Merchant Marine service and was trained as a cook. He was stationed on Catalina Island, and shipped out to San Francisco. After a short six months service, he was called home to help out on the family farm.

Along with being a full time pipefitter, Joe farmed about 50 irrigated acres including where the Syracuse West Stake Center now stands, and also bought 160 acres west of his farm from the Inland Crystal Salt Co. He farmed about a third of that with hay and grain, and raised cattle on the rest.

His father passed away in 1956 and he took over the responsibilities of the family farm. He took great pride in farming, continuing the legacy of his father.

He was a great neighbor and friend to many and was loved and respected by all.

In 1998 Joe and Louise were called on a mission to Cody Wyoming to be hosts at the L.D.S. Visitors Center.

Joe is survived by four daughters: Joanne (Don) Strack, Karen (Mike) Roberts, Barbara (Mike Waddell) Lovell Waddell, and Suzanne (Gary) Riggs; two sons: Russell (Dixie) Simpson and Glen (Susan) Simpson; 29 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren; and two sisters.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Louise Cook Simpson, baby daughter Diane Simpson, grandsons Eli Simpson and Owen Roberts, and son-in-law Douglas Lovell.

He loved his grandchildren and would often say, "Give the grandkids a hug and tell them that I love them."

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse West Stake Center, 1600 South 4500 West, Syracuse, UT. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
