Josephine Preston Madsen

1917-2016

Josephine Preston Madsen, born August 2, 1917, stepped peacefully into eternity on February 11, 2016 surrounded by her family.

During her 98 years, Jo moved over a dozen times. In each new place, she established a home, made good friends, and put down roots. She was looked to for efficient leadership and was a skillful organizer. Jo served tirelessly in women, youth, and children's auxiliaries in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also contributed her energies to a wide variety of community causes that included volunteer work at the Fremont General Hospital in St. Anthony, Idaho, and the University of Utah Medical Center. She also served in leadership positions with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers in Salt Lake City. Jo loved to sing and had a lovely alto voice. She sang with and directed choirs in Idaho Falls and St Anthony, Idaho, and Centerville, Utah.

It has been over two decades since Jo said good-bye to her husband of 53 years, Lyman Winn Madsen. Together they raised five children: Richard (Pamela), who preceded Jo in death in 1981; Winn (Carol), Pat (Richard Davis), Kath (Vaughn Clark), and Nan (Roger Trump). She is survived by 19 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. With her husband, Jo was an ordinance worker in the temple for many years, served a temple mission in Chicago, Illinois, as well as several genealogy missions for the Church.

Through word and deed, Jo taught the value of a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and of patiently waiting on God's timing. She was unfailingly grateful to those who helped her in any way, and her family likewise expresses gratitude to angels on both sides of the veil who served her so sweetly during her waning days.
