Joyce Hunter Clark

Joyce Hunter Clark died Monday, January 11, 2010 at her home after her courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Joyce was born October 9, 1930, to Elton G. and Jane (Jennie) Taylor Hunter. She was the 1,000th baby born that year in the Dee Hospital. She spent the first 12 years of life in Ogden and moving "from bridge to bridge" following jobs around the west for her ironworker father. In 1941, her parents bought a home on Van Buren in Ogden where she spent her teenage and young adult years and made many lifelong friends.

She attended Central Junior High and graduated from Ogden High School in 1948; she attended Weber College and LDS Institute in 1950. While in high school, she had fun summers working at the Del Monte Canning factory, Woolworths and as a bookkeeper for pediatrician Dr. Wesley Anderson. After graduation from Weber, she worked five years at Prudential Insurance Company. Later, she worked at Barnes Bank, Buchanan''s Fabrics and the American Cancer Society in Kaysville.

In 1953, she met Elwood Clark; they married on June 23, 1954 in the Logan LDS Temple. He has been her sweetheart, companion and friend for 55 years. They moved to Provo to finish school at BYU. After graduation they lived in Spanish Fork for 12 years. In 1968, Elwood transferred to the Salt Lake Bureau of Reclamation Office and lived in East Millcreek before settling on Mutton Hollow Road in Kaysville.

She enjoyed serving in many capacities in the church. She worked in all of the ward and stake organizations. She was a member of the Oak Hollow Camp of DUP; a longtime member of the Kaysville Fine Arts Club; a PTA president; a volunteer for the Republican Party; and a Reach to Recovery volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

In 1987, a work assignment took Joyce and Elwood to Brasilia, Brazil, for 2 A½ years. They loved the people and learned to speak Portuguese. From this experience came the opportunity to serve in the Portugal, Lisbon South Mission with a 16-month assignment to the Cape Verde Islands, West Africa. They especially loved working with the young missionaries, calling it their "adventure." They also served a summer at Martin''s Cove doing the Pony Express re-enactments. She also served with Elwood as ordinance workers in the Bountiful Temple and as Guest Service Missionaries at the LDS Conference Center and Temple Square.

She has traveled to many parts of the world including Europe, Africa, South America, the Middle East, Canada, Mexico and all over the U.S., but their home on Mutton Hollow was still her favorite place.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She looked forward to times spent at their Deer Springs Ranch property near Kanab. Spending time with the horses was a wonderful part of her life. She loved camping in the Uintahs'' China Meadows and other areas with family and friends.

Her hobbies were quilting, walking with friends, family histories, shopping (of course), and jigsaw puzzles, she was never without a logic crossword puzzle book.

She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. Music has always been a big part of her life. Joyce enjoyed listening to her husband sing and is the fan club for him and all her family. She loved attending their concerts, plays, recitals and other performances, or listening to them play their instruments and sing at family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband, four children; Anne Hadfield Smith (fiancAC. Darell Jensen), Bountiful; Daniel Clark, Montrose, CO; Leslie Warren (Mike), Herriman; Mary Ellen Clark (Ric Chitwood), Pleasant Grove; foster daughter, Jolene Nelson and her five children, Espanola, NM; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, brother, Robert Hunter (Carolyn), Salt Lake; sister, Nancy Rimer, SC; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Glen, and a grandson, Nathan Hadfield.

Joyce never met a stranger.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville Fairfield Ward, 1085 No. 50 E. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Liberty Cemetery.
