Joyce Randall Sharp Matlock

October 14, 1938 — February 26, 2025

Joyce Randall Sharp Matlock 86, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at South Ogden Post Acute Care Center. She was born on October 14, 1938, at the Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Charles Horace Randall and Mary Tressa Randall.

She attended Weber County Schools and graduated from Weber College in Nursing in 1959. She started working as a registered nurse in the operating room for LDS Hospital and continued to work in other hospitals including Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, California; Western Babtist in Paducah, Kentucky; and McKay-Dee Surgical Center in Ogden, Utah where she spent 44 years of caring until she retired.

In 1959, she married Don Sharp of Ogden Utah, and in 1968 helped him campaign for President Nixon in Washington, DC. They were later divorced. In 1971, she married Dr. Melvin L. Matlock of Paducah, Kentucky. They were married in South Fulton Tennessee and lived in Paducah, Tennessee before moving to Pocatello, Idaho and then later to Ogden, Utah.

They owned vacation homes in S.W. Harbor, Maine; Joseph, Oregon; Kona, Hawaii; and Florida. They loved to travel especially in their RV with their three kids (3 Springer Spaniels), Brandi, Mitzi, and Roxie. They enjoyed traveling all through Canada and the continental United States. They also traveled by plane to some of her favorite places like Scandinavia, the British Isles, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and the Caribbean Islands. Melvin later passed away in May of 2004.

She was a member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, local civil groups, and the Weber County Medical Auxiliary, where she served in leadership positions in both the local and state Medial Auxiliary. She helped start two local children’s health programs and represented the auxiliary on the editorial board for the Utah State Medical Association Bulletin. She enjoyed traveling, collecting artistic things, and planting flowers and vegetables. Mostly she enjoyed the company of her dogs (Brandi, Mitzi, Roxy, Cosmo, Shibu, and Huey), as they were a comfort to her and a source of enjoyment and companionship.

Joyce is survived by her three nieces, Kathryn Randall Kingdon (Michael), Susan Randall Riggs, and Kimberly Randall Moranville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Horace Randall and Mary Tressa Randall; her brother, Charles Dale Randall, and her sister, Donna Jean Randall.
