Joyce "J.D." Payne, age 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2019 in his home in Ogden, UT. J.D. was born on November 13, 1941 in Motley, MN to Duane and Arlene Payne. He was a graduate of Motley high school and soon after graduation he married his "sweetheart" Marilyn (Mac) McGillivray on April 6, 1960 in Minneapolis, MN. They spent 57 years together and shared five children. J.D. enlisted for nine years in the United States Army and served proudly in Vietnam. He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after 31 years. J.D. was a proud member of the VFW Post 1481 and the American Legion Post 134. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, watching NASCAR, playing with his puppies, and rooting on the Denver Bronco and most of all enjoying his grandbabies.
J.D. was hardworking and dedicated to providing for his family, he never looked for praise, he never boasted, he always worked hard for those he loved the most. He was known for being a "jokester and a flirt. J.D. was a kind and generous man with a big heart.
J.D. is survived by his sons Walter and Michael Payne, daughters Linda Bowman, Annette Brieger, and Jodi Reid, his 18 grandchildren, and 37 great grand children. J.D. was also a second father to Cheryl Ann Prenger and David Brieger.
J.D. was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his father Duane, his mother Arlene, his brother Quentin, and sister Clarice.
If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane
I would walk right up to heaven and bring you back again.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 5 p.m. at the Light of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1074 N. Fairfield Road, Layton, UT. Friends may visit family Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, Layton, UT.
