Kale V. Smith

Kale V. Smith OGDEN – Kale VeLoy Smith, 89, died Sunday, January 18, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. Our Dad was born July 20, 1919 in Smithfield, Utah, the third child of Walter Alvin and Aurelia Fredrick Smith. His siblings are Lorna Green (deceased), Delmar (deceased), Nadine Ringel (deceased), Elverna Flint (deceased), Aurelia Ringel, Velma Hampton, and C. Bervard (Joan) Smith. Dad was injured in a sledding accident as a youngster and could not speak for over a year. He was made fun of because of his speech and this made him shy to speak in public. In his youth he also had rheumatic fever which damaged his heart. Dad quit school after the eighth grade and began working. He paid the utility bills for his parents with his earnings. Dad met our Mom, Willmetta June Parrish, at Keeley’s Café in Ogden. They were married April 6, 1941 at the home of Mom’s parents in Layton, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple June 17, 1942. His most precious possession was his sweetheart, June. Dad worked as a meat cutter and moved to Ogden where he worked for the Dinner Horn Food Store for nearly 40 years where he became the Meat Department Manager. He then worked for Safeway Food Store until he retired. Dad could fix or build anything. He changed the oil in his car until the age of 85. He loved square dancing with the Whitney Whirlers, but most all, loved spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife, June, of Ogden; five children, Paul Kale (Gail) Smith, Reno, NV; Jeffrey Lynn (Linda) Smith, North Ogden; VeLoy June (Michael) Nelson, Provo; Delmar Wallace and his fiancé Pati Kibler, Mtn. Home, ID; Douglas Kent (Natalie) Smith, Ogden. Also surviving are Mick (Carolyn) Kuroiwa, Pleasant View; and Dennis Simpson, Washington Terrace, who were part of the family and considered “adopted” sons; 20 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. Dad was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, three sisters, one granddaughter, Connie Linder and one grandson, Scott MacKenzie. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Burch Creek 7th Ward Chapel, 3680 Eccles Avenue.
