KARL O. GUSTAVSON

1930 - 2008

Farmington - Karl Olov Gustavson, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 24, 2008 after a battle with cancer. His wife, children and other family members were at his side.

Karl was born on August 26, 1930 in Lulea, Sweden - just 3 miles south of the Artic Circle. At 19 years old he immigrated to the United States by himself, unable to speak English. He made his home in Salt Lake City, after which his parents later moved to America. Karl was a handsome and athletic person who played soccer for the Viking club. He was a skilled craftsman and engineer in welding and metal fabrication. Karl met Mona Winger, his lifelong sweetheart and companion of 57 years, at a Scandinavian dance at Liberty Park. Mona and her family had immigrated to Salt Lake from Oslo, Norway. Karl and Mona were married on January 27, 1951 and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1971. Karl became an American citizen in 1957, retaining dual citizenships. As a Swede with a Norwegian wife, Karl''s family and social gatherings were always colorful because of the competitive nature and traditional joke-telling between these two nationalities.

Karl''s greatest joy was his family. He was a dedicated husband and father to his three children. They enjoyed skiing, boating and camping a€" particularly with the extended families on both sides. Karl and Mona remained active in their Swedish and Norwegian social groups. As grandchildren and great grandchildren entered his life, he drew even greater joy from family events and gatherings. Those who knew Karl were blessed. His consistently cheerful and positive personality uplifted everyone''s spirits. His Swedish accent was delightsome. He was tolerant, patient and a hard-working man who helped anyone in need. He was faithful in his beliefs and served as a temple worker in the Bountiful Utah Temple.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Annette, and his sister Hjordis. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mona; siblings, Ann Marie (Ramont) Frint, Evy Lunde, and Inger (Paul) Apostalope; children, Karl (Debby), Scott, and Susan (Jim) Solomon; grandchildren, Jason (Christiana) Solomon, Heather (Kevin) Francom, Melissa (Jared) Fox, Jacob (Lacey) Solomon, Lesley Gustavson Kite, Heidi (David) Cuff, Kerrie Mona Gustavson, Jason (Robyn) Smith, Chandi Gustavson and Scott Gustavson. Karl has 15 great grandchildren.
