Karlin John Canfield

1947 – 2021

Karlin John Canfield, age 73, died peacefully in his sleep on February 25th 2021 after a long struggle with complications from diabetes.

Karlin was born on September 27, 1947 in Logan, Utah.  The eldest of 5 children, he graduated from Orem HS, received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University in 1972, and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Utah State University in 1977.

He served a full-time proselyting mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northwestern United States from 1966-1968.  Karlin also served in the United States Air Force for 7 years, rising to the rank of Captain.  He then began working for the United States Department of the Navy in Port Hueneme, California.  Karlin became one of the Navy’s leading technical experts regarding energy monitoring and control systems, which are complex systems that monitor and control facility energy-consuming equipment such as heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, lighting, etc. in government buildings.  He had a close liaison with similar technical experts at the Army Corps of Engineers in Huntsville, Alabama.  The Army Corps often provided technical training for Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps personnel regarding these systems and, given his expertise, Karlin was often asked to be one of the instructors for these courses. He was named Engineer of the Year for the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory in 1990.  Karlin worked for the Navy for 33 years (1979-2012).  He then retired and moved to Utah three years later to be closer to his family.

Karlin served faithfully in his church as a Ward and Stake Membership Clerk for several decades in the Camarillo area.  His hobbies included woodworking, photography, gourmet cooking, and reading.  He also played the piano, organ, accordian, as well as classical and flamenco guitar.

Karlin was preceded in death by his parents, John Oren Canfield and Ora Emily Fuller Canfield, and is survived by his four siblings, Christie Canfield, Mary Canfield, Dr. Anthony Canfield, and Sheila (Brian) Keyes.

Funeral services for Karlin Canfield will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021 at 11 am MST at the Kay’s Creek Stake Center, 2680 East Cherry Lane, Layton Utah, 84040.  The service will also be live-streamed and may be viewed by going to www.lindquistmortuary.com and scrolling to the bottom of Karlin’s obituary page.
