Kathryn F. Barney

1926 – 2016

Ogden – Kathryn F. Barney, 89, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at home following an extended illness.

Kathryn was born on July 13, 1926 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of J. Francis and Sarah Nettie Fowles.  She was raised in Ogden where she attended Ogden High School graduating in 1944.  She went on to attend the University of Idaho, Moscow for two years.  She excelled in geography, sports, and art.  After returning home from the University, she married Gordon Barney on July 2, l948.

Kathryn was an active, faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attending the Ogden 61st ward.  She was sealed to her husband, Gordon, in the Ogden Temple on July 2, l998.  She enjoyed going to the Temple weekly.  She was fortunate enough to receive her Patriarchal Blessing shortly before passing which gave her a great deal of peace and comfort.

She stayed active in her community serving as President of Ladies of the Guard, President of the Bowling League, Secretary of the Ogden Junior League, Corresponding Secretary of Altruists, and Chairman of the Ladies’ Golf Association for the Ogden Golf and Country Club.

Kathryn’s pride and joy was her family.  She was a stay-at-home mom raising four rambunctious boys:  Lant (Terrie) Auburn, California; Drew (Carol) West Yellowstone, Montana; Mitchell (Cindy) South Jordan, Utah; and Rich (Kimm) Ogden, Utah.  She absolutely adored her 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  They became an important driving force in her later years.

Mother loved the out-of-doors.  She was an accomplished golfer, playing on the women’s 4-person team for the OGCC for many years.  She enjoyed skiing, camping, and hunting pheasant, but her true love was fishing with her husband and sons.  Her favorite fishing spots were the lakes around West Yellowstone and Lake Powell.  For her 87th birthday she went on a guided fishing trip to St. George.

She had a number of hobbies, excelling at Bridge and Mahjong.  She will dearly miss her girlfriends from the Mahjong Club.

She is survived by her immediate family.  Much to her dismay, she was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings and their spouses, and very close friends.  For her that was one disappointment about living so long.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Boulevard, Ogden, Utah.  Friends may gather with the family from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
