On January 4, 2025, Kathryn S. Bennett, 88, joined her star in the heavens surrounded by loving family members in her Syracuse home. Kathryn was born November 28, 1936, in Ogden to Eldon Henry and June Kershaw Adams Simmons. On December 5, 1952, she married Vance Tree Bennett and celebrated 60 years of dedication before his passing. She and Vance owned and operated a construction company together, Vance Bennett Construction.
She was proud of her prominent heritage in the Layton area. In the early years, she attended piano lessons, navigating independently on the train to Salt Lake for them. She loved helping at the family farm in Syracuse, especially driving the tractor to bale hay.
Kathryn was bright and funny; laughing and showing her love came naturally to her.
She was a talented seamstress, making clothes for her kids. Kathryn was an excellent cook, and her family will be making her recipes for chili or sloppy joes, while also remembering her by sharing a patty melt from Warrens or chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A while out on a car ride.
She was a talented artist; her collection of paintings proudly hung in her home and in the homes of her loved ones. Kathryn prized her vast collection of family photos and the reminiscing that happened while sifting through them.
She leaves behind other simple treasures; her clown or Santa collections, board games, toys, and her shelf of baubles as long as you only touch the bottom shelf.
Kathryn was a fierce believer in taking care of family. She created traditions for every holiday or gathering. From “fishponds” at the annual family campout, getting up extra early for a good spot at the Pioneer Day Parade, dressing up as a Halloween witch, or hiding the coveted golden egg at Easter.
She will be remembered and celebrated on ordinary days too, as even curling her hair became a weekly party known as “Grandma Day.”
Kathryn turned everything she touched into a memory. She taught people how to see and cherish the littlest details; the wind in the trees, the smell of fresh air in her grandkids’ hair, her favorite flowers, kisses left from blotting her lipstick on tissues, bubbles, beautiful music, poetry, or songs from birds.
If you simplify Kathryn’s legacy into one thing; it would be her extraordinary love for her family. She was deeply loved and will be missed by them.
Kathryn is survived by her children Lisa (Mark) Jones, Taylor; Melinda Haycock, Clinton; and David (Dawn) Bennett, Syracuse. She is adored by 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Vance; her parents; by her son Randy (survived by Sharon) Bennett; and by her grandson Eric Bennett.
