Kay Mitchell
March 20, 1930 – March 19, 2021
“Grandma Kay” passed away peacefully on March 19, 2021. She was born March 20, 1930 in Austin, Minnesota to Clifford Hines and Mae Fink Hines.
Kay’s name at birth was Mary Kathryn Hines and later in life she shortened it to Kay. She was a graduate of St. Augustine High School and attended the College of St. Teresa, Winona. She was a member of the National Honor Society, was editor-in-chief of the school paper and received the school’s only journalism medal at graduation. She was active in dramatics and had several articles and poems published. She graduated from the McConnell Air Hostess-Stewardess School in Minneapolis and was hired as a stewardess for United Airlines.
She married Robert C. Mitchell on September 5, 1953 and they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Together they raised three children. She enjoyed making Christmas and birthdays special for her children and grandchildren with “mountains” of gifts. She never missed recognizing a birthday even later in life.
She enjoyed camping with her family and trips to Redfish Lake in Idaho. She loved the many dogs and cats she had over the years as well. Also, she truly valued the friendships she had at Friendship Manor where she resided up until her passing.
Kay is survived by her three children, Janet (Guy) Frost, Bob (Sonya) Mitchell and Larry (Mindy) Mitchell, 7 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband and parents.
A graveside service will be held Friday March 26th, 2021 at 11 AM at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Kay’s family appreciates the compassionate care that she received from the staff at the University of Utah Hospital.
