OGDEN – Kendall Franklin Pierce also known as “Gunslinger”, 90, passed away on
August 31, 2010.
Born in Wichita, Kansas, on June 19, 1920, to Edwin Paul Pierce and Mary Susan Berry. He was the oldest of three sons. Ken and his brothers Edwin Paul Pierce Jr. and Benjamin Berry Pierce were raised in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
Ken served his country proudly in the US Army for 5 ½ years. During WWII he actively served in the South Pacific for 3 ½ years. He received many awards including the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Citation and 2 Bronze Stars.
His entire life was dedicated to serving others, including building and operating his own Trading Post, working at Hill Air Force Base, Postal Delivery, and Security and Protection for the IRS and other facilities.
After settling in Ogden, Ken married Irene Maude Moss on April 4, 1950. They were blessed with one daughter, Kristene Wright. She was the love of their lives. He also had a step-daughter, Sharlene Mickelson.
He was the owner of Ken’s Gun Shop. He was a Deputy Fish and Game Warden and an instructor for Hunter Safety and taught firearms and survival training. Ken has written many articles for Lyman Gun Company on reloading ammunition and test of bullet speeds. He organized the Auxiliary Police and the Civil Defense Program for Ogden, certifying over 450 people with their Concealed Weapons Permits.
Ken was a member of many organizations including National Rifle Association, National Association of Federal Licensed Firearms Dealers, Utah Peace Officers Association, Shooters Club of America, National Association of Reloaders, National Association of Ammunition Manufactures, American Pistol and Revolvers Association, Royal Australian Rifle & Pistol Club, Deseret Historical Shooters Society, Single Action Shooters Society and Western Fast Draw Association.
He received many awards and trophies for his excellence in flintlock muzzleloader shooting. In 1988, in St. George, he won three gold medals in the World Senior Games.
In 2007, Ken married Karen Mundorff, and again was blessed with a loving family. Ken had a wonderful extended family and many caring friends.
His greatest pleasures included hunting, fishing, camping, and all other outdoor activities. He also loved a captive audience to tell his life stories to.
He is survived by his wife, Karen, three step-daughters, Sharlene Mickelson, Lori (Gerald) Nowling, Heather (Bryan) Hastings and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers, wife, Irene and daughter, Kristene.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Family will meet friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
Interment Ogden City Cemetery.
