Kenneth Bert Frew "Coach Ken"

February 2, 1944 — October 13, 2024

Kenneth Bert Frew, 80, a long-time Ogden resident, passed away unexpectedly at McKay-Dee Hospital following a brief illness on Sunday, October 13, 2024. He was born on February 2, 1944, in Salt Lake City, to Raymond Burt and Laura Louise Perry Frew. Ken graduated from Ben Lomond High School, Class of 1962.

Ken married Bonnie Lou Monson in Ogden on February 16, 1962. Shortly thereafter they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Bountiful Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the years he held callings with the Church including Sports Director, Counselor for the Junior Sunday School, and Counselor for the High Priest.

He worked as a professional meat cutter for many years and held positions at the manager and supervisor levels in various states including Nevada, California, and Utah. He retired as a member of Meat Cutters Union Local 711.

Ken and Bonnie raised three children together and raised five of their grandchildren and one great-grandchild as their own. Ken was a dedicated father who will be remembered as being very present for his family. Any time his family was involved in a game or an activity, Ken was there coaching, supporting, or cheering his family on.

Ken enjoyed being a coach for little league baseball, junior basketball, as well as track. He enjoyed being present in the lives of the many kids that he coached over the years.

One of Ken’s early passions in life was racing cars. However, Ken gave up racing cars for his children, horses, and for coaching. His racecar number was 5, and he found that number to be lucky throughout the rest of his life.

He spent the remainder of his life raising his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You would regularly find him on the basketball court or the baseball field, more times than not at the championship games. He has been known for sponsoring many children that would have otherwise not have been able to play ball. Most of all, he enjoyed making a difference in the lives of children.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Bonnie Frew; his daughter, Brenda Frew; his grandchildren, Christopher Gilgert, Bobby (Kristalynn) Gilgert, Candace Cox, Kenny Cox, Shye’Anne Frew, Preston Frew, Zach Anderson, and Mikayle (Vaughan) McLain; his great-grandchildren, Sayde Atmore, D’Saun Henderson, Andrea Atmore, Nikolai Cox, Kaylor Atmore, Bladen Fischer, Jackie Gilgert, Joshua Gilgert, Emma Frew, Coleson McLain, and Elliott Gilgert; his sister, LaRae (Del) Mansfield; his sister-in-law, Eileen (Lynn) Baxter; and his step-brother, Brent Larson.

Ken was preceded in death by two children, Kenny Frew and Shelly Anderson; one grandchild, Angel Atmore; his parents, Laura and Raymond Frew; stepfather, Ted Larson; parents-in-law Rheal and Bessie Monson; two siblings, Bill Frew and Pat Hilton; siblings-in-law, Ronnie Monson, Claire Monson, Sandy Monson, Lynn Monson; and nephew-in-law, Mark Monson.

“He was not only a wonderful brother, he was a big tease, a great friend, and a kind, loving man, who I will love forever and ever.” – LaRae Mansfield (Ken’s sister)

“My heart is full – we were always as one.” – Your loving wife for all eternity, Bonnie Frew
