Kent LaVor Johns
June 10, 1948 – December 9, 2017
LAYTON – Kent LaVor Johns born June 10, 1948 in Safford, Arizona to his parents LaVor Johns and Margaret Jane Echols Johns Layton, and later his bonus dad Luke Layton. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and eternal companion of 49 years Jolene Johns on Saturday December 9, 2017. He died from multiple health conditions resulting from a heart attack and complications following open heart surgery, which included kidney and liver failure. He was raised in Arizona and Colorado in his younger childhood. He married his high school sweetheart Jolene on July 18, 1968 in Central Arizona; they were later sealed in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple.
He worked for Thatcher School District as a bus driver and maintenance technician. In 1982 he got a job with Dillard’s Department Stores, which took him to many places that included: New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and in Utah. He was finally able to retire after 32 successful years of employment.
Kent was an outdoorsman who loved camping, fishing, hiking hunting, and he loved to tell the story of the biggest catch of the day, which at times was the bait on his hook; however he made it sound as though it was the biggest fish he had ever caught. He loved studying Archaeology and Native American culture and artifacts.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for all of his earthly life. He served many years as a Stake Missionary; he was a High Priest and faithful home teacher. He loved to read the Book of Mormon and had read it nine times, and was just shy of having completed it ten times within 2017 alone. He had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ that he shared with others, and he enjoyed serving others throughout his lifetime.
Kent is survived by his wife Jolene Johns and his seven children; Allan Johns, Dwayne (Shanda) Johns, Curtis Johns, Norman (Jamie) Johns, Mandy (Blake) Lechtenberg, Darrin (Kelsey) Johns and Tiffany (John) Malloy, and his eleven grandchildren with one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and grandson. His passing will leave a void in our hearts, and he will be truly missed until we meet again as an eternal family. We would like to thank the wonderful and caring ICU staff of McKay-Dee Hospital for the tender love and care they provided during his stay.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Cherry Lane Chapel, 1325 E. Cherry Lane, Layton, Utah. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd, Layton, Utah and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
