Koula Toulatos
OGDEN – Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Koula Toulatos, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was 90 years old.
Koula was born in Pocatello, Idaho, February 20, 1920, to Eleni and Kosta Tsakalos, and shortly thereafter moved to Greece where she was raised.
In 1947, she returned to the United States and married Gus Toulatos in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City on March 5, 1948. Together they raised five children: Vangie Gray, Kaysville; Marino (Karen) Toulatos, Ogden; Elaine (Fred) Smith, San Diego, CA; Deno (Peggy) Toulatos, New York; and Nick (Jan) Toulatos, Ogden. Her husband, Gus, died July 14, 1974.
Koula enjoyed gardening, cooking, being with family and friends. She also loved working for the Greek Food Festival.
She was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration in Ogden and spent many years serving her church in many capacities. She and her husband were one of the founders and contributors to the church.
Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. No one made browned butter spaghetti like YiaYia.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, granddaughter, Christi, brother, John, and sister, Demetria.
The family would like to thank Crestwood Care Center and Applegate Hospice for their loving support and care.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 674 – 42nd Street, with Father Mario Giannopoulos officiating.
Friends may visit with the family at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. with Trisagion Prayer Service at 7 p.m.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 674 – 42nd St., Ogden, UT 84403, in her name.
“We are sure YiaYia is doing her Greek dance in heaven. May her memory be eternal”.
