La Ree Taggart Scott

OGDEN – La Ree Taggart Scott, 87, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and compassionate friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 26, 2014.  La Ree was born in Lewiston, Utah to Frederick and Eulalie Ardella Leavitt Taggart on November 13, 1926, the youngest of nine children.

Schooling from kindergarten to 9 ^th grade was in Lewiston, Utah, 10 ^th grade went to North Cache High in Richmond, Utah, and during WWII her parents moved to Ogden, Utah, where La Ree graduated from Ogden High School in May of 1945.  In high school she worked after school at S.H. Kress and also at Thomas Dee Hospital.

Then she moved to Logan, Utah and worked for the William Budge Memorial Hospital as their very first aide and then Budge Clinic for Dr. Omar Budge until she married Winfield Morrill Scott on September 2, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Winfield was from Logan, Utah, but attending medical school in Los Angeles, California. She worked in Los Angeles at the Good Samaritan Hospital and later at the County General Hospital.  They then moved to Orangevale, California, in 1953, where Dr. Winfield M. Scott had a practice. In August of 1955 they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where her husband did a surgical residency, then in late fall of 1958 they moved back to California living in Fair Oaks with his practice. In July of 1963 they moved to Enid, Oklahoma, where her husband had a practice with Dr. LeRoy Gau and Dr. Howard Norris until they passed away in 1967, with Winfield continuing to practice Family Medicine, Urology and a surgeon.

They lived in Enid until May of 1998 when they moved to North Ogden, Utah, where three of their children lived who could help La Ree care for Winfield after he had a stroke.  After her husband passed away on June 26, 1999 – two and a half months short of their 50 ^th wedding anniversary, La Ree spent time with family and friends and worked for a time as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Utah LDS Temple until she had a slight stroke and developed Alzheimers.

La Ree was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has always been active with a strong testimony and has served faithfully in many callings in branch, ward, and stake, in teaching Primary, Sunday School, M.I.A., Relief Society and served as Relief Society President, and also her husband’s speaking companion as he served on the high council as they drove thru out their large stake in Oklahoma for several years.

While living in Enid, Oklahoma, she was a member of the Ladies Shriners and a member of the AAOA-Auxiliary to the American Osteopathic Association.

La Ree loved life and being with her family and having picnics and cookouts and family get togethers over the years.  She was a very compassionate, caring person with a gift to nurse people whether family or friends or acquaintances back to health after surgery and sickness and many times took in the children of a mother who just gave birth or was ill; taking care of the children as her own.  Even with her Alzheimers and while living in assisted living she would help the other residents out even sitting at their beside when sick or dying to help feed them and nurse them back to health.  She always had a smile and a fun sense of humor and loved babies and children.  She loved to collect dolls, figurines of cottages, light houses, castles, flowers, and anything of beauty.  Loved to crochet afghans and sew until her memory started to fail her.

La Ree is the mother of four sons and two daughters, who are: Dr. Michael Bruce Scott (Janice Glenn), Enid, Oklahoma; Emory Winfield Scott (Judith Joan Hunter), Australia; Ida Mae Scott McKay (Alan Bruce Mckay), Ogden, Utah; Dr. Fred Dacon Scott (Deborah Lynn Weese), Robinson, Illinois; Toby Taggart Scott (Charlotte Cragun), Pleasant View, Utah and Crystal Scott Hahn of Ogden, Utah.  At the time of her passing she had 25 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 2 due in early 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all of her siblings.

La Ree was the last living grandchild of George Washington Taggart of the Mormon Battalion and comes from a noble family and heritage who when heard the Gospel message embraced it as pioneers and never looked back thru all their trials…  She was a woman of great faith and fortitude blessing her family in so many ways and we will miss you mother until we meet again…

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Fruitland LDS Ward Chapel, 2250 North Fruitland Dr., North Ogden.  Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. and on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church.
