Larry Lee Stewart

Aug. 16, 1932 – Aug. 17, 2018

A day after his 86th birthday—surrounded by the family he had built and nurtured—Larry L. Stewart came to the end of a life filled with puttering, tinkering, camping, fishing, gardening, and joking.

Born in Ogden, Utah, on Aug. 16, 1932, to Harold and Sylvia Stewart, he grew into a fixer extraordinaire and had the strong belief that things should be repaired or repurposed rather than discarded. (Among his inventions was a metal real estate sign reimagined as a pooper-scooper. That scooper was put to the test by an English mastiff, and passed.)

As a teenager, he asked Dorothy Bradley if she’d like to go out after the Little Brown Jug rivalry game between Ogden High and Weber High football teams. After he graduated from Davis High School, they were married on Jan. 26, 1951, and would spend the next 67 years together.

Soon after they were married, Larry took a job at Hill Air Force Base that would blossom into a 37-year career. He retired in 1987 as an analyst with the base’s Materiel Management Directorate.

He spent his retirement years camping and fishing at Browne Lake in the Uintas; growing tomatoes, potatoes, corn, kohlrabi, and more in his large garden; eating all manner of delicious food including those homegrown vegetables; inventing solutions to household problems; visiting with his beloved family; and being surrounded by multitudes of dogs. His favorite canine companion was his chocolate lab mix, Cocoa, and he cherished the memory of her long after she had passed.

Among his proudest accomplishments were 20 years of service as a volunteer firefighter with the Roy City Fire Department.

His children have fond memories of visiting him at the station while he awaited the call to save lives and property. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Stewart, brother, Ronald (Jolene) Stewart, and his four children: Shanna (DeLore) Ricks, Steven Stewart, Karen (Richard) Farver, and Kenneth (Brenda) Stewart. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A private service took place in his honor. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Lung Association.
