LaRue Nielsen Glasmann

OGDEN - LaRue Nielsen Glasmann, 82, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at her home of causes incident to age. She was the last of the "Nielsen girls" and left us to join her family for an early Memorial Day Family reunion. She was born to Joseph Andrew and Ruby Williams Nielsen on August 3, 1925 in Portage, Utah on the family farm. She was the ninth child in a family of ten and grew up learning the value of hard work by feeding the day workers on the farm.

When Mom was 13, the family moved to Garland where she attended school in Box Elder County, graduating in 1943 from Bear River High School. Following a short employment at Hill Air Force Base, she attended Utah State Agricultural College graduating with a Bachelors degree in Social Work. Mom began her career with the Utah State Industrial School (reform school) as the Head Matron. In the early 1950s, she changed career paths and began working at the Children''s Aid Society of Utah, where she placed many infants in loving homes. Mom quit working outside the home after the twins were born and returned to work after her family was raised. Her second career was as a fur consultant at Weinstocks where she received several Outstanding Employee Awards.

Mom married Robert Vern Glasmann on November 14, 1949 in Garland, Utah. Their union was blessed with four children, a son Robert Vern Jr., and three daughters Jill, and "the twins" Kim and Kelly. Mom loved being married and raising her family. She was a terrific mother and installed a love of reading in all of her children. Mom was always there to take care of her family and to help them out at a moments notice. She was a good cook and was famous for her delicious rolls and pies. LaRue and Bob were divorced after 31 years of marriage.

Mom was involved in many different charity organizations. She was a member of the Junior League of Ogden and Chareya Club. Mom had a love of classical music and served as President of the Ogden Symphony Guild. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at the McKay Dee Hospital.

LaRue was an avid bridge player all of her life. She played her final bridge hand last week and truly enjoyed her friendships with the ladies in her bridge clubs.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various callings in the Primary and Sunday school.

She is survived by her son, Robert Vern (Ann) Glasmann Jr., Wichita, Kansas; her three daughters, Jill (Dr. Craig) Hurst, Ogden; Kim (Brian) Burr and Kelly (Albert) Montoya, both of South Weber; twelve grandchildren, John (Kristy) Glasmann, David (Nancy) Glasmann, Emily Glasmann, Brett (Cameo) Hurst, Derrick, Clint, Carly and Austin Hurst, Jessica and Katelyn Burr, Whitney and Kelsey Montoya; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, five sisters and one great- granddaughter.

A special thanks to Katie Casteel for her warm, loving and compassionate care that allowed Mom to fulfill her wish of remaining in her home through her last days.
