Laura Maestas Garcia
August 22, 1925 ~ February 21, 2015
Our beloved mother, Laura Maestas Garcia, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2015.
She was born August 22, 1925 in Canjilon, New Mexico to Tomas and Frances Romero Maestas.
Despite struggling with various health issues throughout her life, she stayed positive, kept her sense of humor and never lost faith in God and love for her family, especially her grandchildren. She had a great support system; children who refused to send her to a nursing home and were honored to take care of her 24/7 (as she took care of them) until her last breath.
She died as she lived with dignity and love and the understanding that death does not separate us from those we love. It deepens our union with God and with each other. “Rest in Peace”, Mom, and though we grieve, reaching for your hand in vain, our faith is such that we believe that all of us shall meet again.
Laura is survived by two sons, Tommy (Loretta) Garcia, Riverdale; Patricio (Barbara) Garcia, Mesquite, NV; three daughters, Mary Garcia Quintana, Roy; Frances (Rick) Horspool, Pleasant View; Barbara Cordingly (Jeff Schaffers, Fiancé) Roy; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Tomasito “Junior” Maestas, Ogden; three sisters, Teddie Valdez, Lela Maestas, and Perfy Maestas, all of New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Manuel Maestas, Adam Maestas, three sisters, Ester Maestas, Corina Garcia, Susana Leyba, and her loving grandson, Martin Corey Quintana.
We would like to thank all of our siblings for keeping their promise to Mom to never send her to a rest home, no matter what. We especially thank our sister Barbara, for her persistence in steering us the right way. We would like to thank Jeff Schaffers for his generosity of time, gentleness, kindness and support in helping our mom and our family through these challenging times.
We would like to acknowledge the loving and dedicated (24/7) Support Team from Brighton Home Health and Hospice; Trudy Osborn, CNA, Mallory McLean, CNA, and Tiffany Baker, RN, for always being there for us and teaching us how to take care of our mom with patience, love and dignity. Thank you to Karla Johnson, Spiritual Counselor/Chaplain, Sunny McEuen, Social Worker, Angie Wheeler, the On Call Nurse, and Dr. Patel for selflessly giving of your heart and soul to provide comfort to others.
A special thanks to Dana, from Wasatch Home Helpers, and Bertha and Chantel from the Senior Companion program for keeping Mom company and going over and above on their weekly visits to assist and care for her.
Prior to hospice, Mom spent over a month at Pine View Transitional Rehab, rehabilitating from a broken elbow and after effects of a stroke. We thank Jeanette Hall and her professional staff, especially the young CNAs for their exceptional care and attentiveness in taking care of Mom in a way that only family could.
