LaVar Kump
LaVar Kump, 92, passed away at the home of his daughter, Karen Bills, on July 31, 2008 in Draper, Utah.
He was born Feb. 6, 1916, the fourth child of six to Lewis Henry Kump and Blanche Otteson Kump in Fountain Green, Utah.
He married Laura Chadwick on Aug. 3, 1939 in North Ogden, Utah. He passed away three days before their 69th wedding anniversary.
LaVar was a high priest in the LDS church. He graduated from Provo High School and attended BYU on a basketball scholarship, where he excelled for four years as the starting guard. He graduated with his Masters Degree in education from BYU and worked in the school system for 30 years as a coach, teacher, and principal. After retiring as an educator, he worked for North Ogden City for 26 years, retiring at the age of 80.
LaVar loved sports. After completing a highly successful collegiate basketball career, he played on local basketball and semi pro baseball teams, one of which was the Provo Timps. LaVar was drafted by the major leagues St. Louis Browns; unfortunately, LaVar was drafted by Uncle Sam at the same time. He served three years in the Navy during World War II.
In addition to his family, LaVar loved ANIMALS, gardening, fishing, and watching sports on TV. We will always remember his quick wit and sense of humor, kindness, work ethic, and tenacious desire to be independent. During his retirement years, he was an example of courage and determination.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, Draper; his two children and spouses, Byron (Jane) Kump, South Jordan; Karen (Walt) Bills, Draper; his Uruguayan daughter and spouse; Ana (Barry) Eldredge, South Ogden; his brother and spouse, Dr. Ronald (Irma) Kump, Saratoga Springs; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters.
