ROY – E. Lavar Smith, 79, died peacefully at home September 15, 2009. He was born on December 18, 1929, in Malta, Idaho, to Elmer Bradley Smith and Lillian Gray. He grew up in Menan and Carey, Idaho.
He married his high school sweetheart, Delores Sparks, in the Idaho Falls Temple on October 8, 1948. They moved to Roy, Utah, to manage a Western Auto Store in 1955. Later he became the owner of Smith’s Sinclair Service Station on 4000 South in Roy. He retired as a parts salesman for NAPA.
Lavar was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, serving in many callings, among which was Bishop of the Roy 15th Ward. He loved serving as a home teacher and in the Ogden LDS Temple baptistery.
He was elected to the Roy City Council and served as a volunteer and board member for the Roy Historical Museum. He volunteered in the Cardiac Rehab unit at Ogden Regional Hospital.
Lavar is survived by his wife, children, Debbie (Robert) Steed, Denise (Mike) Martinez, Layton (Becky) Smith, Laird (Carolyn) Smith. Also surviving him is a brother, C.G. (Donna) Smith of Arco, Idaho; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with another expected in January.
As a family, we wish to thank all those who gave such kind and special care to Lavar, especially Dr. Gregory Almony and Ann Larsen, as well as Julie and Ivan from Access Hospice Care.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedar Crest Ward, 3845 South 2000 West.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary 3333 West 5600 South, and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
