Lawrence G. Chambers

Lawrence G. Chambers passed away on Sept 13, 2012. He had his wife of 60 years by his side when he died.

Lawrence was born on March 22, 1933 to James and Berla Chambers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He was the youngest of 9 children. When he was 4 years old, his mother died. He was then adopted by Nathan and Beulah Wilson where he grew up on their farm and was one of their boys.

He married Darlene Carter in Ogden, Utah on October 10, 1952. They made their first home in Clearfield, Utah and made the biggest move after 27 years by packing up and moving to the house next door.

Lawrence was employed at Hill Air Force Base. He was hired at the age of 18 and was one of the first people with a disability to be employed at HAFB. He worked there until he retired in 1992. He was a member of American Legion Post 134 of Clearfield, Utah. He was proud when they gave him a lifetime membership to the legion. He was one of very few non-military personnel in the country to be given this honor and received it because of his service to his community and members of the Post.

He loved camping and loved taking his grandchildren up to Carter Creek and it was there that his grandchildren learned the stories of walking with the dinosaurs and going on sniper bunny hunts. Grandpa always had a tall tale to tell and the sniper bunny always had gifts to hide for the children to find.

Lawrence was also known for his garden. He would plant over 300 tomatoes and different vegetables every year. If you knew Larry, you knew his garden. It was an open farmers market for everyone. Cars would pull up, friends would get out, and bags would get filled for anyone that needed it. Every summer this fed many families that needed the food. Larry taught us all about loving thy neighbor.

After his retirement, Larry got bored and went to work for Clearfield City as a Crossing Guard. Many of you waved to Larry as he helped kids cross in front of the Post Office in Clearfield. He loved those kids and it was a hard day when he knew he couldn''t work anymore.

Lawrence is survived by his wife Darlene Carter Chambers of Clearfield; four children, Caroline Tertocha of Brier, WA, Florence Allen of Clinton, UT, Moy (Shelly) Chambersof Salem, UT, and Carla (Alan) Joos of Baton Rouge, LA; brother Jim (Donna) Chambers of Roy, UT; 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his adoptive parents, 4 sisters, 3 brothers and a grandson.
