Lawrence “Fred” Hyden

Lawrence Aldon “Fred” Hyden, 91, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home in Ogden surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born on October 31, 1924 in Howell, Utah to Reuben Aldon and Katherine Wolfe Hyden.
He grew up in Logan, Utah, then attended Logan High School and Utah State College.
Fred married the love of his life, Wanna Mae Moore on December 21, 1951 in Ogden, Utah. Wanna had a son, Terry, whom Fred always treated as his own.
Fred had his own roofing business, then spent 30 years of dedicated service at Hill Air Force Base and retired as Sheet Metal and Line Supervisor. After retirement from HAFB, he worked part-time at several pawn shops, plumbing jobs, and Chuck Moore Jewelry with his brother-in-law Charles Moore.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team and the 82nd Air Bourne Division. He participated in various campaigns in Italy, the Invasion of France, and the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled Veterans, Gem and Mineral Society, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
Fred regularly looked forward to talking and “shooting the bull” with his buddies. His favorite pastimes included golfing, fishing, pheasant hunting, watching sports and westerns. He and Wanna enjoyed taking long drives in the car including quick trips to Wendover, Nevada. Fred felt most at home at the family cabin near Bearmouth, Montana where he loved to mine for gold and connect with family and friends from all over. He will be remembered for his humor, storytelling, singing, and his love for music and dance.
Fred is survived by his wife, Wanna Mae Hyden of Ogden; sons, Brad L. (Debbie) Hyden of North Ogden and Walter Bart (Kathy) Hyden of Riverdale; and his stepson, Terrence L. (Sally) Hanna of North Salt Lake. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Nelson of North Salt Lake; his granddaughters, Ashlee M. Hyden of Washington Terrace; Amber L. Neilson (Rusty) of Plain City; and one great-grandson, Robert J. Neilson; along with several family members who knew him as Grandpa Fred including, Valleen and Tavin Nye, Tyler Lee, and Linda (Ryan) Pilkington. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister, Virginia Owens; and his brother, Burton Leroy “Bud” Hyden.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
