Lee Robert Sundgren

May 12, 1943 ~ December 15, 2021

Lee Robert Sundgren passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

He was born May 12, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan, son of Evert Hjalmer Sundgren and Ruth Catheryn Mudge. He grew up and attended school in Detroit, graduating from Demby High.

He joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Hill AFB in Utah, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Kae Vaughn. They were married in Evanston, Wyoming and shared 55 years of marriage. Together they had three daughters, Sheryl, Lori and Tara.

During Lee’s time in the military, he was stationed in Thailand and Vietnam, specializing in munitions. After his service he went to work for Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemicals where he advanced to the position of general manager over ponds and harvest.

Lee enjoyed a variety of things in life including golf, swimming, bowling, ice skating and horse events. Although he rarely rode himself, he was always helping and cheering on his family and friends at these events. He was the Roy Junior Posse leader for many years and spent endless hours supporting the youth in that organization. He loved to travel and would return to Michigan regularly to spend time with family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time in Park City and Las Vegas. One of Lee’s greatest joys was putting together family events and setting up games, competitions and good food.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where loved his callings in the library, and as door greeter for Sunday services.

Lee is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughters, Sheryl (Jeff) Sandberg, Lori (Troy) Sandberg, Tara (Kent) Thurgood; his sister, Luanne Fowers; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Larry Sundgren and grandson, Kolton Thurgood.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home. The special people at the facility helped Lee and his family with awesome care, fun activities and a compassionate, respectful approach that will not be forgotten.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. The family will meet with friends Monday, December 20th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
