LeGrande Harlon Simmons
Our beloved husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle, and friend, age 81, returned to our Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 5, 2008 due to complications from cancer. LeGrande was surrounded by family and friends at their home at the time of his death. LeGrande was born October 4, 1926 in Layton, Utah to Robert and Maggie Barnes Simmons. He lived his entire life in the Layton/West Layton area. He married Coleen Okelberry, December 3, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. LeGrande served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings: Bishop of Layton 2nd Ward, 1st Counselor in Layton West Stake Presidency and served with his wife, Coleen in the Nairobi, Kenya, African Humanitarian Mission.
LeGrande had a great sense of humor. He was quick to respond with a witty comment. No matter where he went, he always made friends. LeGrande had great compassion for those who needed help, and was always honest in his dealings.
LeGrande was a businessman, rancher, and farmer. He served in the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Utah Angus Association, and as Vice-President of the Layton Jaycees. He enjoyed farming, ranching, hunting, camping, fishing, traveling, was an avid JAZZ fan, and going down to the field to see the cows. He loved being with his family and celebrating holidays.
LeGrande is survived by his wife, Coleen of 54 years: son, Kris L. (Maria), Farmington; and daughters, Lesa (Steve) Cogburn, Ivins, UT; and Leslee (Brad) Allen, Las Vegas, NV; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His parents; two brothers, Evan and Dean; and two sisters, Virginia Bennett and Fern Newman, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Layton West Stake Center, 505 South 1000 West. Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
The family is grateful for the love and tender care received from the Utah Cancer Specialists and a special thanks to Lisa and Dr. Stinnett.
