Leland Ray Saunders

Leland Ray Saunders quietly passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015.

He was born November 15, 1922 to Edward Thomas and Marcia Slater Saunders in Ogden, Utah.

Leland was a hard worker, working with his father in the construction business.

He was proud to serve in the U.S. Navy and worked at Hill Air Force Base before taking over Saunders Construction Company, which he ran with the upmost integrity. There are many homes, churches, and buildings built by his company.

Dad was the first mayor of Harrisville, serving for 12 years.

Our Dad’s greatest passions were his wife and children. He was a very devoted husband and the father of ten children. He was always looking after everyone and making them feel special.

He was a very stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Elders Quorum President, Stake Young Men’s, Bishop Counselor, Bishop, Counselor in the Stake Presidency and Patriarch. He and his wife, Leila, served a mission to Australia.

He loved fishing, ran track, and played basketball. BYU and the Utah Jazz were always followed closely. He enjoyed watching all sports on TV.

Leland is survived by his wife of 72 years, Leila Porter Saunders; children, Marilyn Cheney, Janet (Brent) Van Alfen, Joy (Doug) Wiese, Kevin Saunders, Gary (Nedra) Saunders, Edward (Katie) Saunders, Ronald (Julie) Saunders, Lori (Scott) Robertson, Roger (Deanne) Saunders, Alan (Lisa) Saunders; 52 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-granddaughters.

The family would like to thank AFI Home Health and Hospice, especially Vlad, for their help and care.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at the Harrisville 2nd Ward, 435 West Harrisville Road. The family will meet with friends Tuesday, January 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
