Lena A. Allen

1924 ~ 2017

Our dear sweet mom, grandma, great-grandma, great-great-grandma and friend, Lena A. Allen passed away peacefully, Thursday, July 20, 2017 at her son’s home in Sandy, Utah, with her loving family at her side.

Lena was born April 5, 1924 in Riverdale, Utah to Alma and Maryann Allen. She attended school in Riverdale and graduated from Weber High school.

Lena met Keith Allen, the love of her life, and after a short courtship they were married June 2, 1943. They were later sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple January 18, 1953. They spent 63 wonderful years together.

When the children were growing up, Keith and Lena enjoyed taking the family on car rides for picnics to such places as Mirror Lake, Yellowstone, and Morgan Valley where Keith grew up. They also enjoyed taking trips with their good friends, Helen and Earl Kroger.

She worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 37 years, lastly in the South Weber area, retiring in 1989. She was missed by many people on her route, some of which posted signs on their businesses wishing her a happy retirement. She enjoyed quilting alongside her may quilting friends with whom she enjoyed spending her time tremendously. Her family cherishes the many quilts she was a part of creating that were given as gifts to family members. Many were raffled off during family reunions, the proceeds of which went towards funding future family reunions and more quilts.

She had an amazing gift of giving cards for all occasions---birthdays, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc; she never forgot anyone on their special day.

Until the final couple of months of her life, Lena had an incredible social life, going out to eat for lunch multiple times a week. The establishments she visited loved having her as a customer and her visits. Into her 90’s, she still enjoyed going to the North View Senior Center with her daughter, Judy, to listen to The Westerners.

She was still very active to the end; for Memorial Day weekend 2017, at the age of 93, she visited six cemeteries in four days, paying respect to passed loved ones. Her mind was still sharp as a tack until the very end.

Lena leaves behind three daughters and two sons; Judy (Harvey, deceased) Drysdale, Larry (Kathy), Bill (Pat), Janet (Allen) McCoard, and Christine (Bart) Smith. She also leaves behind 22 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren (with another one on the way), and twelve great-great grandchildren (with another one on the way). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Keith, her sisters, Hilda Bosgieter, Mabel Combe, and Mary Edna Melle, brothers, Maurice, Leonard, Raymond, and James Allen, and great-granddaughter, Laycee.

The family would like to thank the fine care given to Lena by Dr. Stephen Bruce for over 30 years and, in her final days, by Summit Home Health and Hospice---especially Brenda, Angel, Bailee and Kiera. They would also like to thank Dean Rackham for watching over her and her yard for so many years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. The family will meet with friends on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road.
