Leonard Steven Byington, 97, passed away on March 13, 2013 at McKay-Dee Hospital of causes incident to age.

He attended school in Hooper and Ogden. He joined the Navy before finishing high school and served honorably from 1934 to 1938 and again from 1945 to 1946. He served aboard the USS Arizona and the USS Holland.

He had been employed at HAFB as a radio technician. After retiring from HAFB, he went to work on the ice docks at Farr''s Ice Cream.

On April 10, 1939 he married Vivian Louise Bybee in Uintah, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized on June 9, 1978 in the Ogden LDS Temple. Together they had 6 children. She passed away on June 20, 1988.

He married Darlene B. Layton on February 9, 1990. This marriage brought 10 more children to the family.

Dad really enjoyed spectator sports, often watching two different games at the same time, and keeping track of both. For many years he had season tickets to the Utah Stars and then the Utah Jazz and also the Golden Eagles Hockey team. He also had season tickets to the minor league baseball team Ogden Dodgers for many years. For the last couple of years, he and Darlene had also been attending most of the home games of the Ogden Raptors.

Dad was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a quiet man but had a deep faith in Christ.

Dad always thought of his wife and his children before he thought of himself. He did whatever was necessary to love and provide for this family.

Dad is survived by his wife, Darlene; children, Dale, Linda Gardner, Fay (John) Dvorak, Jay, Steve (Diane) Layton, Kathy Hoggan, Scott Layton, Randy Layton, Russ (Karen) Layton, Linda (Ron) Thornton, Sharon (Dane) Dansie, Doug (Launi) Layton, Richard (Stacie) Layton, Mary (Wes) Snow; a daughter-in-law, Diana (Barney) Cooley; 52 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian; two sons, LaMont and Alan Byington; three daughters-in-law, Karen Byington, Glenda Byington and Candy Layton; parents, three brothers, one sister, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
