Leonard Paul Dickamore

October 11, 1926 ~ December 7, 2017

After a rich and full life devoted to serving everyone around him, and with his children by his side, Leonard Paul Dickamore, 91, slipped peacefully from this earthly life to the next and reunited with loved ones eagerly waiting.

Leonard was born on 11 October 1926 in Ogden, Utah to Paul and Nellie Upton Dickamore.  He grew up in Harrisville, working alongside his parents, three sisters and two brothers on the family dairy farm.  He joined the Army when he was 18 and served during World War II, truly a member of the “Greatest Generation”.  He rarely spoke of his experiences, first in the Philippines where he contracted malaria and then Hiroshima, Japan after it was destroyed.  Leonard had a Patriot’s heart and a deep and abiding love for his country and for those with whom he served.  He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

After returning from his military tour, Leonard met the woman of his dreams, Muriel (Mary) Chadick, and they married on 9 June 1948 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  They were blessed with three children, Paul, Jan and Sue, and they nurtured their family and their dreams in Ogden and North Ogden.  He worked for the Utah Department of Transportation for 34 years and retired as an area supervisor, maintaining the highways and roads of northern Utah primarily in Cache County.  He was a skilled heavy equipment operator and worked tirelessly and fearlessly to prevent or resolve countless numbers of crises during his career, many times at the risk of his own life.

Over the years, Leonard and Mary expanded their family through adoption…not of babies or children, but of elderly widows or couples who became literal grandparents to their children.  They loved and served many wonderful people with all their hearts throughout their lives, their examples of Christlike service becoming much more than threads but the very fabric of their children’s lives.

Leonard is joyfully reunited with his precious wife, Mary, daughter Jan whom they lost when she was two years old, his parents, brothers Al (Mary) and Tom (Sharlene) Dickamore and sister, Betty (Wayne) Bradshaw.  His surviving sisters are Ruth (Bill) LaFleur and Helen (Morgan) Wilson, also Mary Jensen Dickamore Close.

Leonard’s legacy lives on in his children Paul Martin (Ilene) Dickamore, Sue (Doug) Heiner, his six grandchildren Mike (Holly) and Mark (Amy) Dickamore, Staci (Ben) Wright, Summer (Jeff) Stark, Matt (Kate) Heiner and Jenasie (Chris) Earl, also 19 great grandchildren who love and miss him.  He will also be missed by his other children, Doug and Launi Layton, who loved and served him for many years; they are truly family.

Leonard’s family grew to include the residents and caregivers at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home.  Words are inadequate to express the family’s depth of love and gratitude to those who cared for Leonard during his time there.  Their devotion, respect and love were manifest in every act of service performed.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
