Leonard “Johnny” Johnson
September 15, 1925 ~ June 13, 2014
Johnny Johnson passed away peacefully on June 13, 2014. A seventy-year resident of Ogden, he was born in Chicago on September 15, 1925. He was raised in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Mayta Johnson. He joined the Navy in the spring of 1944 and was stationed in Utah. There he met Beverly Joan Weaver, who became his bride on September 19, 1946. They raised four children in Ogden: Leonard, David, Joann and Steven. Johnny joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1961 and later was sealed to Beverly in the Ogden LDS Temple.
Johnny worked for Browning Chevrolet for 19 years and for the Defense Mapping Agency for 20. He loved fly-fishing and woodworking. He was also a basketball enthusiast, coaching the youth teams in the Ogden 37 th Ward, running Stake programs and later managed a church basketball league at Weber State. Johnny was an avid Weber State basketball fan and also followed the Utah Jazz. Johnny and Beverly were enthusiastic bowlers, playing in a league with many dear friends for decades. They enjoyed traveling with Beverly’s sister Marge and her husband Reed Henderson to many places in the west. They also enjoyed traveling to see grandchildren in the mid-west, attending birthdays, baptisms, sporting events and graduations. Indeed, Johnny spent many hours with all of his thirteen grandchildren, attending many events, games and special times.
Johnny was a devoted husband, caring diligently for his sweetheart. When his beloved Beverly was at Manor Care, not only did he visit and care for Beverly daily, he was almost an unpaid member of the staff, because he spent many hours a week helping with various jobs at Manor Care. Later, after Beverly was gone, Johnny became known as ‘Johnny on the Spot’ in his apartment complex, giving rides and other assistance to those in need of help.
Johnny Johnson is survived by his sons, Leonard Johnson (Teri), Salt Lake City; David (Becky) Johnson, Sandy; and Steven (Heide) Johnson, Eugene Oregon; and his daughter, Joann (Randy) Bell, Mountain Green. Thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren also survive Johnny. His father, mother, brothers, Ray and Robert and sister, Jessie preceded him in death.
