Leonard Eugene Smith
Leonard Eugene Smith, lovingly known as Bones or Gramps, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on September 11, 2015 while napping in his easy chair with his bride of 64 years nearby.
Leonard was born on November 15, 1925 to Athol Yeates Smith and Wynnola Lee Layne in Redlands, California. Leonard served his country as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy on 2 Submarine tenders, the U.S.S. Aspro and the U.S.S. Spikefish with the 45th Submarine Squadron during WWII and was in Tokyo Harbor on September 2, 1945 during the signing of the treaty with Japan. He married the love of his life Lois Erlene in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 9, 1950 and became Dad to Erlene’s daughter Gail. They later had a son, Larry Layne. Leonard and Erlene Lived in Huntington Beach, California for many years where he was a member of the Huntington Beach Elks Lodge #1959. He worked for Southern California Edison Company for 32 years before beginning his retirement. Leonard and Erlene later relocated to Bountiful, Utah in 2001 to spend their retirement years closer to their family.
Bones was a vibrant individual who loved his family deeply. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always quick to email a funny joke to the individual he thought would enjoy it most. He liked to fish, loved watching sports and cursed creatively while golfing. He loved to travel the world and see new things while making memories with his family. Bones also loved to eat out with family and especially loved going to Café Rio for lunch. For dinner though, Gramps loved eating all together at someone’s house. He made the effort to be involved in each of his children’s, grandchildren’s, great-grandchildren’s and great-great-grandchildren’s lives. His family truly was his treasure and he reveled in the wealth he found in their love. He made a lasting print on our lives and hearts with the man that he was and the legacy that he leaves behind.
