Leone ‘Toni’ Meacham Whittier, age 99 1/2 years young, left an incredibly impressive mark on this world.
She was born September 18, 1924 and left this earth on Friday, March 8, 2024, after a short hospital stay as the result of a fall. She had her loving family at her side.
Mom was born in Ogden, Utah to Ira Eldon and Bessie Herrick Meacham, and was the last surviving family member. Mom was the 6th of seven children. Marie (Mathie), Elma ‘Billie’ (Taysom), twin brothers Eldon and Edwin, brother Gilbert and baby sister Myrna Dea (Bangerter).
She graduated from Ogden High School in 1941 and was a contributor to the Ogden High School Tiger Alumni Legacy Endowment Fund and was most likely the oldest graduating donor contributing to that charity.
From her first marriage, she was blessed with two sons, Ed Haynes and Bruce Eldon Haynes. Mom met the love of her life Brooks ‘Whit’ Whittier in February 1949 and they were married September 29, 1950. To their beautiful union they added three more children, Neil M., Kevin Dee and Donna.
Mom was crowned ‘Miss Hill Air Force Base in 1950, and it was no wonder, as she was as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside. Mom worked on the Manhattan Project in Tennessee, at Boeing and Hill Air Force Base. When dad’s job took them to Ramstein, Germany, mom went to work for the US Air Force. She loved golfing and golfing trips with their friends, traveling across the country in their motorhome visiting friends and mining for sapphires and opals with dad. Her greatest passion, besides her family, was her love for writing. She published five books and had several short stories and poems published in different magazines over the years. She was always so proud to say she was a published author.
Mom felt very blessed in her life and was a believer in giving back to her community. Her generosity benefited many local charities with her monthly donations for over 30 years. With all her many accomplishments in this world her capacity to love everyone was her crowning glory. No one ever left her presence without mom saying, with a smile on her face, “Love you”!
Mom was preceded in death by her sweetheart ‘Whit’, her sons Bruce Eldon (Marsha) Haynes, West Haven, Utah; and Neil M. (Karen Whittier Cook), Murrieta, CA. She is survived by her sons, Ed (Georgia) Haynes, Fort Collins, Colorado; Kevin (Susie) Whittier, Salinas, California; and Donna (Tim) Thompson, Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming; 21 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
What a legacy this incredible woman leaves behind. The family would like to thank all her Riverdale friends and her friends at Sunridge Assisted Living in Roy for the love they gave to mom over the years, as well as the caring staff at Sunridge who were there to help her whenever she needed it. We would also like to thank the wonderful nursing staff at McKay-Dee Hospital for treating mom with such dignity and respect in her last days.
