Leslie Northam
Leslie Ruth Kahealani Downs Northam passed peacefully and returned to her Father in Heaven’s arms on Thursday April 18, 2019 at the age of 43. Her battle with cancer was an 11 month testament to her strength and love.
Leslie was born on April 7, 1976 in Westminster, California to two loving parents Lawrence Charles Downs and Erron Leiloa Hao Downs. Leslie was number 5 of 7 siblings and she was often relied on to help raise and watch her brothers and sisters.
Leslie graduated from Viewmont High School in 1994 and in April of 2018 she made her dream come true by becoming a Registered Nurse and getting her BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing). From the age of 12 she had always wanted to be a nurse, she was so ecstatic to finally achieve that dream. All she wanted to do was help people.
Leslie (Lezlie) met her best friend, lover, and husband, Norman (Jay) Arthur Northam Jr., in January of 1996. They loved each other so much that in the 21 continuous years of blissful marriage, they married three times. They eloped, were married in Disneyland and, and then were married in the Bountiful Temple. Together they have two beautiful and incredible daughters Bailey Marie Kahealani, and Megan Shay, one grandson Tucker Scott and a granddaughter Myka Ruth coming in August.
Her many joys in life include family, laughter, and mostly Alice her sweet, sweet puppy. We have joked that Alice is her therapy animal and that Leslie loved that sweet puppy more than she loved her family. Leslie loved life, she loved people and she was so encouraging that she would stop and talk to strangers and ask them to get their cancer screening. She wanted to be the poster child for getting your screenings; she said that if she could prevent even one person from having to go through this then it would be worth it. Leslie loved to laugh, she laughed often and knew it is the best medicine and heals the heart.
Leslie was not often serious and this message reflects her playful nature. She was serious about her open arms and open door policy. Everyone was welcome in her heart and in her home. Her love of the Savior guided her life and inspired the love she shared openly. Leslie put nothing before her family and will continue to take care of them from heaven. Leslie is a strong and courageous servant of the Lord and she was happy to offer her testimony of the truth of the gospel to all that knew her or crossed her path. She was so open with her testimony that she shared it with the world.
Leslie was preceded in death by her father Lawrence Charles Downs and her big brother David George Downs. She is survived by her loving husband Norman (Jay) Arthur Northam Jr., daughters Bailey Marie Kahealani Northam, Megan Shay Reitzel, grandson Tucker Scott Garner, siblings Lawrence Scott Downs, Sandy Carl Kapahu Downs, Christine Tehoa Western, Matthew Eric Downs, and Jennifer Rebecca Uilani Downs.
