Lewis D. Davis
SOUTH OGDEN – Lewis Delbert Davis, 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on August 1, 1923 to Joseph and Maryette Davis in Wilson Lane, Weber County, Utah. He attended area schools and graduated from Ogden High School in 1941.
Lewis married Laverne Gibby of Ogden, on February 23, 1943, and they shared nearly 65 years together.
As part of the greatest generation, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw combat in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operation. He was seriously wounded when his ship was sunk by Japanese shore batteries during the landing of Allied troops engaged in the liberation of the Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart and many other medals and campaign ribbons for his wartime service.
After returning to the United States, he attended Weber College for a brief period and then was employed at the Railway Mail Services, the U.S. Post Office, and at Hill Air Force Base, where he retired after 32 years of service. He and his wife LaVerne lived in the Ogden area all their lives, where they raised their six children. They have 23 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Grandpa was happiest at family gatherings, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Lewis was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Gibby Davis of South Ogden; daughter, Cheryl Nicole Bennett of Eugene, OR; sons, Lewis (Elaine) Davis of Winston, GA; Bruce (Valerie) Davis of Layton; Brian (Debbie) Davis of Ogden; Alan (Eileen) Davis of Layton; and Michael (Kathy) Davis of Roy.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, a granddaughter, Trisha Davis Creer and a great-grandson, Zachery Davis.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley 5th Ward Chapel, 5735 South Crestwood Drive with his son, Bishop Bruce Davis, officiating.
Friends may call at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday at the Ward chapel 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
