Linwood Smith

Linwood Smith passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009, after an extended illness.

He was born March 5, 1932, in Deep Run, North Carolina, son of Earnest William Smith and Nora Harrison. He moved to Ogden, Utah, in 1947, where he met his adoptive family, the Roberts.

He served in the Army in Germany. In 1955, he married Ann Hadlock, and they later divorced. Linwood married Anna Marie Porter Barnes on March 30, 1979 in the Ogden LDS Temple.

He learned the trade of finishing cement from his father-in-law, Harold Hadlock. Linwood worked as a cement finisher for the next 40 years. Many of those years he worked closely with his partner Joe Archuleta. Linwood worked at Hill Field until 1981 as a cement finisher and in the paint shop, retiring due to his health. Then Linwood worked security at McKay-Dee Hospital. He really enjoyed this job and the friends he made. He retired due to his health in 1994. Linwood enjoyed many years as a member of the Ogden Boat Club.

Linwood served faithfully in church callings and as a home teacher over the years. In 2002, he was called to a Church Service Mission at the Ogden Cannery. He dearly loved this time of service. He was released due to his health in 2005.

He never met a stranger, just a friend he didn''t know yet. He had an amazing gift for reaching out and loving others and letting them know it.

He is survived by: his wife, Anna Marie; his children David Smith of Clearfield; Scott Smith (Karen) of Clinton; Diane Hudkins of Hooper; Craig Smith of West Valley; Nancy Porter (Norris) of Georgia; Mark Barnes (Wendy) of Indiana; 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; his siblings Irene Jenkins, Bruce and Clifton Smith of North Carolina; Rudolph Smith of Oklahoma; Mary Ruth Davis, and Horace Smith (Betty) of Ogden; his adoptive family Chuck Roberts (Elaine) of Ogden; Valynn Beasley (Mel) of Kaysville; Yvonne Thurman; Luana Smith; Wright Roberts; and Teddy Roberts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Leo and Ralph Smith, his adoptive parents Everil and Gladys Roberts, and his adoptive brother McKay Roberts.
