Lisle Bruce Lake
SALT LAKE CITY – Lisle Bruce Lake, age 94, passed away early Thursday morning, August 23, 2012 of natural causes. He was born April 15, 1918, in Seattle, Washington to Lisle Lorraine and Delora Candland Lake.
Bruce attended and graduated from Ogden High in 1936 where he was also a member of the basketball team. He attended Utah State University graduating in 1940 with a B.S. in Geology.
He was drafted into the Army on March 21, 1941, after Pearl Harbor he re-entered the military and applied for Officer Candidate School, graduating in 1942. During a 10-day leave Bruce came back to Utah to marry his sweetheart LaVon Earl on December 23, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple.
During World War II, Bruce was an Ordinance Evacuation Officer in the European Theater. He came ashore on Utah Beach 60 days after D-day and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
After WWII, Bruce returned to Ogden HS where he taught ROTC. Upon the outbreak of the Korean War, he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan where his lifelong passion for golf began.
After Korea, Bruce continued a military career moving every 2-3 years with his wife LaVon, son, Roger, and daughter, Christine. Bruce retired from the Army after 20 years attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Bruce and LaVon returned to Ogden where he had a second 20 year career as a procurement negotiator at Hill Air Force Base. Bruce was an avid golfer and was once the Senior Amateur Champion of Utah. At various times he was a member of the Ogden Country Club, Wolf Creek and Bloomington Country Club. Bruce and LaVon spent the last years of their lives enjoying their friends in St. George, Utah. Bruce was a member of the LDS Church. He served as Ward Clerk and St. George Temple Worker.
Bruce is survived by his son, Roger Bruce Lake, St. George; daughter, Christine Lake (Heber) Jacobsen, Salt Lake City; sister, Nedra Lake Wagner, Westminster, CA; sister-in-law, Norma Allred, Layton; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
His family would especially like to thank the gracious and steadfast care Bruce received while living without LaVon in St. George provided by John Jensen, Lorene Reynolds and John Mathews, his very special and good friends.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden. Friends and family are invited afterward to the home of Christine Lake and Heber Jacobsen in Salt Lake City for a light meal and remembrances.
