Lloyd “Bud” Willard
LIBERTY – Lloyd “Bud” Willard, slipped peacefully from this life on Saturday, September 15, 2007. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Bud was born in Liberty, Utah on January 20, 1923 to Thomas and Emmaretta Atkinson Willard. He was one of seven children. Grandpa lived in Liberty his entire life with the exception of the time he served in the military.
He married Verena Allred on August 1, 1943 in Liberty. This union was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They spent over 60 wonderful years together and raised five children.
Bud served with the U.S. Army during World II in the Asiatic Pacific. He was self-employed as a rancher for 10 years. He retired from the Utah Department of Transportation after 20 years of service, where he developed a lifelong friendship with his buddy Ray Petersen.
Bud was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in several callings.
Bud loved horses and rodeos. He was a founding member of the Ogden Valley Cutter Racing Association and a longtime member of the Wasatch Slopes Cutter Racing Association. He was a member of both the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association. He instilled his love for horses in his children and grandchildren and spent countless hours supporting them at rodeos, horse shows and races. He also loved working with leather. Bud and Verena were once honored as Grand Marshalls of the Liberty Days July 4th Celebration. He loved visiting with old friends each week at the stock sale. Grandpa had a quick wit and an infectious smile that was loved by all who knew him. We often joke in our family that he was once a member of the Liberty Ward Singing Mothers.
Bud is survived by three of his children: Sharon (Frank) Southwick, Jim (Carol) Willard and Sheila Gibson, 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one sister Dorothy (Gene) Sanders.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verena and two sons, Scott Willard and Monte (Lisa) Willard.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Amy and Bridgette from VistaCare, Lisa from Hospice of Utah, and many loving friends and neighbors for their help and support.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Ward Chapel, 4150 North 3300 East, with Bishop Dale Carter officiating.
