Loel West Dean
April 7, 1929 ~ December 11, 2016
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on December 11, 2016. Loel West Dean was born on April 7, 1929 to Doris West and Arvel W. Dean in Santa Monica, California. As a child, Loel moved to Ogden with his mother and his sister, Dixie. Loel lived in Ogden most of his life. As a young man, Loel was known for his beautiful singing voice. He married Kathleen “Kathy” Coop on April 2, 1955.
Loel had a love for the outdoors. He loved to shoot, hunt, and fish. He is rumored to have been a good fisherman, but his youngest son never saw him catch anything. Loel also loved to golf. He was a member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club for over forty years, where he served on the Board of Directors. He and his wife Kathy enjoyed winters in Palm Desert, and treasured the friendships they made there as well as the wonderful restaurants.
Loel fell in love with boating when Lake Powell was filling up, and then he was hooked. He and his family enjoyed countless vacations at Lake Powell, and in the San Juan Islands. As a family, they loved to share funny memories with each other, which would usually start with, “Do you remember that time when we were boating and...” while boating they would cliff dive, explore canyons, and hike to beaver ponds.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952.
He was an entrepreneur and an excellent salesman. His career began selling cars for the Frank M Browning Corporation. Later, he began selling real estate, opened his own real estate office, and developed property in the Ogden area. Loel had a genuine interest in those who worked with and for him. His love of beauty expressed itself in the beautiful neighborhoods he created.
Loel is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children and their spouses, Lorl and Dixon Kapple, Kirk and Leigh Dean, Bonnie and John Wood, and Brett and Dorothy Dean; his ten grandchildren, and four beautiful great-granddaughters, his sister; Dixie Parker; and numerous other relatives.
Special thanks and acknowledgement to his daughter Bonnie, and her daughters Chelsea and Sunee for their loving care in the last days of his life.
Loel loved people, and was known to deliver a wet kiss. He had a talent for making those around him feel important and valued, and held his friends close to his heart. He always loved a party, but wasn’t a big fan of funerals. And so, to honor his wishes, there will be a Celebration of his Life instead. An open house will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 from 12 to 3 p.m. at Zucca Trattoria, 225 25th St Ogden, UT. Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
