Lois Margaret Coats

Lois Margaret Coats, 87, died Monday October 9, 2023 at her Layton home.

Lois was born September 21, 1936 in Yunnanfu China, the daughter of Christian Missionaries.

Her parents, and brother David, lost their lives while serving in the mission field in China. Their story is well documented in the National Archives in an article titled Murder! Orphans! Escape!

Lois and her three surviving siblings were raised in Spokane, Washington in the loving home of their uncle and aunt and their two boys. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1954.

Lois married Joe H. Coats in January of 1958. She had met Joe, an Airman serving in the United States Air Force, while he was stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane. They were blessed with two children, Philip and Joel.

Lois and Joe, and their two boys would spend the next 30 years serving around the U.S.A. and Europe at the needs of the Air Force.

Lois was a fiercely strong family leader, devoted mother, and wife, raising her two boys and maintaining the home alone while Joe was away for a two year period during the Vietnam conflict and many unaccompanied tours.

One of their Air Force assignments was to Hill AFB where Lois and Joe decided to put down roots.

Lois loved Jesus and her Family. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton.

Lois is survived by her children, Philip and Joel; four grandchildren, Mark, Michael, David, and Daniel; her brother Johnny, and her cousin Luke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, brothers David and Mark, sisters Ester and Ruthie, and her cousin James.

Lois loved to read and travel. She will be remembered for her sweet, kind spirit that served to strengthen everyone she met.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.  Friends may visit with family Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary prior to the service.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton.
