Lois Hodson Thornley 1915 a" 2011
OGDEN a" Our beloved Mother, Grandma, Sister and Friend passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, April 18, 2011 at the age of 95. She was born in Marriott, Utah August 17, 1915 to George Alma and Della Stanger Hodson. After her mother''s death, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Hattie Gibson Hodson. She grew up in a large family and was the third oldest of six children.
Lois married Merlin Layton Thornley on November 14, 1933 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She and Merlin lived in Layton, Clearfield and then moved to Ogden in 1942 where they spent the rest of their lives. Merlin died on October 14, 1991 after 58 happy years of marriage.
They raised four children: one daughter Marian, her husband Darrell and their two daughters Karie (Kent) Eggleston and Kathy (Merrill) Butler, and three sons, Dennis Thornley (Mo), Kent Thornley and his daughter Kim (Dan) Bailey, Dave Thornley and his two daughters Kamee (Tony) Shrope and Tiffany Thornley.
Lois and Merlin have their five granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, Darek (Megan) and Tana Eggleston, Brock and Kailey Butler, Luke and Grace Riedesel and one great-great-granddaughter Ellie Eggleston, with another one on the way. She was very close with her sister and brother-in-law Marion Blanche (Glen) Noorda.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Merlin, her parents and two sisters Bernice and LaVon and two brothers Ralph and DelMar.
Lois worked at St. Benedict''s Hospital for several years as a nurse''s aide in the Maternity Ward and also at Sierra Lingerie as a seamstress until her retirement in 1975. She was a beautiful seamstress and loved to crochet. She had made beautiful articles for her family and friends that they will treasure forever. She won First and Second Place Ribbons at the Teton County Fair in Jackson, Wyoming in 1989. In 2008, she won First Place and Judges Choice in the Needle Arts at the Weber County Fair.
She looked forward to Thursdays when she had her hair done by Kim and enjoyed having lunch at Dee''s Restaurant with her daughter and other family members.
Small in stature but big in personality, she had a way of laughing at herself that made others laugh with her. She had a special way with words. It was not uncommon for her to go through all family members names before coming up with the right one followed by "Oh Hell". When you went to visit, she always had a football or basketball game on. She was an avid Jazz Fan. Sharp as a tack, she knew her teams, stats, and standings better than anyone. Her easy going ways made family, friends, and pets always feel welcome. We will miss her cooking and the fun times we had at her house.
She will be missed but never forgotten. As Lois always said, "well anyway". . .
