LuJean (Jean) S. Evans

LuJean (Jean) Sanders Evans, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2017, in Layton, Utah.

LuJean was born on December 17, 1928, in Farmington, Utah, the third daughter and fifth child to Doan Clarence Sanders Sr. and Sarah Laurette Burton.  She grew up on the family farm and attended schools in Davis County. She graduated from Davis High School in 1947.  She also attended Utah State University in Logan, and later Brigham Young University in Provo.

LuJean served a LDS mission to the Central States LDS Mission from 1950 to 1951.

One Sunday afternoon, while out driving around and visiting a friend in Layton, she was introduced to a young man who was currently on leave from the Army.  He had been drafted during the Korean War, which was still going on at that time.  Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to Layton, where she later married LaGrand Hyrum Evans in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 5, 1953.

During LuJean’s early years of high school she worked at the Ogden Arsenal after school and all day on Saturday, where she was a file clerk.  At the end of her sophomore year at high school that summer, the war ended and things returned to normal.  The next summer, the now famous “Lagoon” opened up and she went to work as a “cashier” on the Roller Coaster and later the Dodgems.  She also worked at Walker Bank and Trust and Beneficial Life Insurance Co. in Salt Lake, spending many hours riding back and forth on the then “Bamberger Train”. It was during this time that she developed her love for doing embroidery work.

She worked at the License Plate Renewal Department, Miller Floral, and later began her lifetime career for the Davis County Schools working as an elementary school tutor, library assistant, and later a bus aide for Special Education children until her retirement in March 2003.

LuJean was a active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in various ward positions during her lifetime.

Her interests throughout the years have included reading, gardening, word searches, embroidery projects, watching DVD musicals, playing piano, and spending time with her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, LaGrand who passed away on July 23, 2016; parents; two brothers, Doan Clarence Jr., Edward; two sisters, Vilate, Lucy; one brother-in-law, Joseph F. Parrish; two sister-in-laws, Carma Buehler Sanders, Miquette Emery Sanders.

LuJean is survived by her three daughters, Janet (Kenneth) Fredrickson,  Sandra Evans, and Elaine Evans; one son, Douglas LaGrand (Pamela) Evans; eight grandchildren, Camille (Stuart) Marshall, Bryce (Audrey) Evans, Jennifer (Matthew) Prescott, David (Whitnee) Evans, Alison (Sean) Reilly, Melissa (Todd) Rogers, Stefanie Fredrickson, and Jessica (Jordan) Reed; 16 great grandchildren, Porter, Kalli, Cordy, Abigail, Emma, Logan, Cooper, Tanner, Elsie, Adilynne, Kaylee, Garrett, Natalee, Hayden, Lily, James, and two on the way.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to all the many workers and staff members for their compassionate care of our mother, and the kindness showed to our family while she stayed at Fairfield Village and a special thanks to Inspiration Hospice for all their extra help.

In honoring our mother’s request, there will be no funeral services.  The family will be holding a graveside service Friday, April 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 East Crestwood Road, Kaysville.  Family and friends may visit Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Perpetual Education Fund.
