Lula Smith Robinette
"The Lady Known as Lu" died Thursday, April 14, 2011 at McKay-Dee hospital. She was born on December 16, 1916 in her parents home in Logan, Utah. She was the 5th of 6 children of Dr. Isaac Samuel Smith (Dentist) and Lula Yeates Smith.
As a child she liked to dress in fancy costumes and sing and dance to the Victorola. Having skipped from the 6th to the 9th grade, she graduated from Logan High School at the age of 16, where she enjoyed singing and dancing in plays and musicals, and performing in the marching band. She was president of the dance club, on the school paper staff, in addition to working in the school office.
She married Martin L. Robinette " Mart" on March 17, 1933 in Salt Lake City and they were sealed in the Logan Temple June 21 of the same year. They enjoyed a special love throughout their 66 years of marriage. Mart preceded in her death in 1999.
During WWII she worked as "Lulu the Torch" at the Richmond CA Shipyards. As a "burner" she cut metal plates A½ to A¾ inches with a torch. She could hardly move in the heavy boots, clothing and helmet. She soon transfered to the office to track requisitions for ship parts and equipment. Lu spent many years in secretarial work for Beneficial Life and as a medical secretary for Dr. Ray Broadbent, a Plastic Surgeon in Salt Lake. Being ambidextrous, she could "show off" by writing with both hands, separately or simultaneously.
Her family moved from Carmichael, California to Salt Lake City in 1951 and to the Ogden area in 1959. She was deeply involved in church service in such capacities as: Mutual President, Stake Mutual Board, Relief Society President, Cultural Refinement and Spiritual Living teacher, Temple Ordinance Worker, and teaching Sunday school at the reform school for boys in Ogden.
Blessed with a beautiful voice, she sang in the Ogden Chorale in the 60''s and 70''s and sang solos at some of their concerts on tours of the western states and Canada. She sang with a double trio " The Crescendos" for nearly 12 years entertaining at church events, private parties, women''s clubs etc.
As a life-time member of the Volunteer Auxiliary of the Mckay-Dee Hospital she served on the Board of Directors, Head of Hospital Volunteers and President in 1975
Lu will be remembered for her ability to see beauty all around her and to see the best in others. She had a great love of family, supporting reunions and family trips.
In short, her husband''s tribute says it all: "You have made such a beautiful and warm home for us. You have an unusual ability to arrange everything so beautifully and so harmoniously. Everywhere we look there is peace and beauty."
Of her life, Lu said " I was blessed with wonderful parents, a wonderful husband, wonderful children and wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What more could anyone ask?"
Lu is survived by her two daughters, Ruth (Dave) Eakin, Portola Valley, CA; Susan Robinette, Ogden; one son, Martin Smith (Helen) Robinette, Glendale, AZ; 17 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.
