Lyle Mayes Cheney

Lyle Mayes Cheney, 87, of Clinton, UT, died Thursday, February 1, 2024.

He was born on January. 28, 1937, in South Gate, California, to Theron Allen and Dorothy (Mayes) Cheney.

He started to work on the family farm at a young age and loved to work with animals, to build cars and equipment, and learning to drive when he was 5 years old. He graduated from Madison High School (Rexburg, ID) in 1955. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States Mission.  

Lyle also served in the Idaho Army National Guard, enlisting in November of 1959, and was honorably discharged as a corporal in November of 1965.

On March 30, 1961, he married Zaradine Slagowski in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

He attended the University of Idaho and graduated in March of 1965. He went back to school and finished his Masters Degree at Oregon State University in 1978.

Mr. Cheney worked as a Teacher in Vocational Education all over the state of Oregon until his retirement in 2000. He also taught in Quincy, WA and Wilcox, AZ.

He was selected as Oregon Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1982-83.

Family members said he enjoyed scouting, building cars and construction.

He is survived by seven sons and six daughters-in-law, Jon and Taunia Cheney of Wasilla, Alaska, Jeffery and Gienah Cheney of Vernonia, OR, Lance and Amber Cheney of Fairbanks, AK, Craig and Pam Cheney of Clinton, UT, Mark and Holly Cheney of Spokane, Wash., Brent Cheney of Hillsboro, OR and Jared and Patti Cheney of Gresham, OR; a daughter, J’lene Ludtke of Moses Lake, WA.; 29 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 201 West 8000 South, Archer ID.  Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment, Sutton Cemetery.
