Lyllismae “Mae” Minerva Homer Hess, longtime resident of Layton, Utah, passed away at the age of 88 in her home on the morning of November 16, 2018. After a very brief struggle with the flu, Mae peacefully went to her Father in Heaven. This amazing woman was a stoic example in the lives of her family and friends, giving a pieced of her heart to all those who had the honor of knowing her. She was incredibly gifted with her hands, making personal quilts and afghans for each and every blood relative, ensuring unique quality was gifted into each work of art.
Mae was born to Russell King Homer IV and Kuulei Anna Verret in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 28, 1930, living most of her young life on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. She was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 3, 1939. With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Mae was relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she ultimately met the love of her life, Albert Neal Hess, marrying him on June 19, 1948. Neal and Mae were sealed in January 1991 for time and eternity in the LDS Temple. They were blessed with four children; Allen (Amy) Hess, Marlene (James) Cole, David (Marcy) Hess, and Larry (Jennie) Hess. Mae is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Neal, their four children, 19 grandchildren, and 57 great-grandchildren.
Mae was a loving and attentive wife, mother, grandmother, and “Nana” to her cherished family members, and will be deeply missed. Knowing she rests in the arms of her loving and Holy Father in Heaven gives peace to each grieving family member who will cherish and treasure the memory of her in their hearts forever. “May God receive you with the warmth only the Holy Spirit can give.”
