LYNN J. LUND
1935-2014
Lynn J. Lund passed away peacefully on Sept 6, 2014 at the age of 78 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He will be remembered as a brilliant, hard-working man & loving father who often went out of his way to help people. Born in Fountain Green, UT, he grew up in Murray, Utah and attended Murray High School. Lynn served in the Southern States LDS Mission which he always looked on as a pivotal point of his life and through which he made lifelong friends.
What was to become a lifelong career in law enforcement and jurisprudence started with his humble beginnings as an ambulance driver, then a clerk for the Salt Lake City Police Department. He quickly advanced and became a police officer with the city, then a deputy with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s office. Eventually, he felt that he could make a greater contribution to his field as an attorney. Throughout his career, he had a fierce determination to prepare himself professionally. He earned two bachelor degrees, one from BYU and one from the U of U. He got a mini-Masters from the University of Southern California and a juris doctorate from the University of Utah. He also attended many seminars, professional academies, and specialty courses.
Lynn went on to become a nationally known consultant and expert who trained and mentored many law enforcement agencies and correctional institutions throughout the U.S. and internationally. He was an instructor and trainer at Utah’s Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy, and served from 1983 to 1989 as Utah’s Inspector General. He also successfully argued a case before the Supreme Court of the United States. He was a member of such associations as the Utah Association of Executives, the Utah Chiefs of Police Association, the American Society of Public Administrators, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Utah Peace Officers Association, the National Sheriff’s Association, and the Utah Trial Lawyers’ Association.
Yet through all of that professional service, Lynn often ended up going out his way to help people with personal legal problems without charge. He found great joy in helping others in situations where they could not help themselves or afford professional help. Lynn loved people, which was obvious in how he so easily engaged those he interacted with. He could see the humanity in everyone and had a gift for connecting with people. He was a charismatic, loving man with a warm charm and funny wit. His family often said that they could never go into a restaurant, no matter where it was, without someone who knew him coming up to say hello. He also loved a good story, many of which came from his own experiences, and which often poked fun at himself. Even as the ravages of Alzheimer’s began to diminish his faculties, his warm and genuine concern for people continued.
He loved riding motorcycles and being outdoors. His passion for these activities was infectious and he greatly enjoyed inviting others to join with him and his family. His favorite rides were in the mountains of northern Utah while on family camping trips. He also loved annual family trips to Lake Powell where he would drive the boat so family and friends could enjoy water skiing and other water sports. Lynn also loved vanilla ice cream, trucks, shooting guns, road trips, self-help books-on-tape, country music, his mother, and making people laugh. He was a man with an open and genuine heart, who was constantly searching for the deeper meaning of life.
He was preceded in death by his father Jewell Lund and his mother Evelyn Mortensen Lund. He is survived by his former wife, Tamera Lund; 3 brothers, Grant, Gerald, & Michael Lund; a sister, Sheryl Lund; 4 sons, Keith Lund, Russell Lund, Alan Lund, Brian Burrell; a daughter, Katrina Lund; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Bountiful 13th/53rd Ward Chapel, 1365 N. 650 E. Bountiful.
