Lynn D Thorne, 85, of Syracuse, Utah passed away peacefully Saturday February 22, 2025, with his family by his side. Lynn was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and though he will be greatly missed, we rejoice in the knowledge that he is again with his sweetheart, Ruth.
Lynn was born to DeWayne and Melba Thorne on May 3, 1939, in Murray, Utah. He grew up the oldest of four brothers and spent his young life playing sports. Lynn graduated from Davis High School and then served as Airman 1st Class in the USAF National Guard. Lynn took a pause from the military to serve a mission for his church in the British mission. Upon his return, Lynn enrolled at BYU where he earned his Bachelor and later master’s degrees. While at BYU, he met and married the love of his life Ruth Ann Denny in the Salt Lake Temple on May 25, 1962. This union blessed them with 7 children who are grateful for the lessons and love Lynn showed them all throughout their lives. Lynn and Ruth spent years attending events for their children and grandchildren, traveling, and serving in the Alabama Birmingham and Salt Lake City Family History missions. Upon Ruth’s passing, Lynn was blessed to have met and married Nancy Miller. Together they spent the last 15 years attending family events, traveling and enjoying each other’s company. Nancy has been a blessing in the lives of Lynn, his children, and grandchildren.
Lynn’s chosen profession that brought him happiness and lasting relationships was that of teaching and coaching. Lynn spent so many hours with young people teaching them the importance of team, focus, and hard work. Whether in a car teaching driver’s education, or on the court, Lynn’s students knew he expected the best from them, and more so, that he cared about them and their lives.
Lynn was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Lynn served as Elder’s Quorum President, Sunday School President, Young Men’s President, and on the High Council. Sloop Lynn T loved his association with his young men and spent numerous outings on the lake, in the mountains and around campfires bearing testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Lynn’s testimony was solid, and he shared his feelings about his Savior openly every chance he could. His children and grandchildren knew that he believed in the doctrine of eternal families and often said that he was trying to live worthy of being with Ruth once again.
Along with his family, Lynn loved golfing, fishing, Louie and Sam, and Marsh Lake (IYKYK).
Lynn is survived by his wife Nancy, his children, Tammy (Travis) Heslop of Syracuse, Utah, Vicki (Brock) Hill of Syracuse Utah, Scott (Shelly)Thorne of Syracuse, Utah, Ryan (Andra) Thorne of Clearfield, Utah, Kristie (Wayne) Taylor of Syracuse Utah, Steven (Natalie) Thorne of Clinton, Utah, Step Children, Michael (Brenda) Miller, Scott Miller, Kelly (Nathan) McLain, Brad (Marlene) Miller, Matt Miller. 31 grandchildren (two currently serving missions), 20 great grandchildren (with one on the way), 12 Step grandchildren, and his brothers Larry Thorne and Dennis Thorne.
Lynn was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Ann, his daughter Lynda Cline, his granddaughters Lisa Marie Eames and Anna Ruth Thorne, one brother Rick Thorne, and his parents.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Utah, and especially his nurse Melanie. Lynn loved her so much.
