Richard Lynn Weeks

Richard Lynn Weeks, age 90, of Layton, UT returned home peacefully on June 22, 2012. Born November 30, 1921 to Ephraim Weeks and Rosa Christina Jensen of Smithfield, UT, he attended grammar school in Smithfield and then North Cache High School in Richmond. In fall 1940, Lynn started classes at the "A" (USU) to become an aircraft mechanic. In 1941 he became one of the first hundred mechanic learners that were trained at West High in Salt Lake City, and the same year enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In September of 1942 he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas as a member of the 82nd Flight Training Group and remained there until the end of WWII in August of 1945 helping to train fighter pilots and gunners and fixing the B-17''s. At the end of the war he spent some time in Florida working on B-25''s. He honorably left service in March of 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant having clocked over 1,300 hours of flight time.

Lynn and Orla LaVerne Leavitt were sealed in the St. George Temple on October 4, 1944. They were blessed to have three sons (Steven, Donald, and David). Orla passed away on May 18, 1957. Lynn cared for his boys by himself, until he met and married Beverly Steel Leavitt on August 22, 1958. Beverly had two sons (Warren and Larry) from a previous marriage, and the couple were later blessed to add two girls (Christine and Jeanette) and another son (Roger) to their family.

In 1946, Lynn returned to Hill Field as a civilian mechanic, then from 1962-1972 he was a government inspector on Boeing projects mostly on the Minuteman II and Minuteman III missile programs then retired in 1972 and was home for less than 6 months before he went to a trade school, learned how to repair appliances, and started his own business, which he kept at full time until 1991, and after that, part-time until he turned 80. His customers wouldn''t let him retire, and he was at his happiest when busy doing something with his hands.

Lynn loved serving his church; filling callings in Elders Quorum and High Priest group leadership, as well as many years as ward or stake financial clerk. He and Beverly, served an L.D.S. mission in Lansing, MI; from 1991-92. He was a faithful and dedicated home teacher. Lynn loved spending time with his family, gardening, studying the scriptures, and talking with friends. He was very well loved and will be deeply missed.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Orla, son Don, sisters Dora, Kenna, brothers Grant, Kenneth, Ralph, Ferris (Tim), and Calvin.
