“Together Again”
Madge Y. Griffin
SOUTH OGDEN – Madge Yvonne Fowles Griffin, 87, peacefully returned to her Heavenly Father on Friday, February 15, 2008 from causes incident to age.
She was born August 29, 1919, in Hooper, Utah to Charles and Louisa Emeline Child Fowles. She was raised in Hooper and attended Hooper Elementary and Weber High School. At Weber High, she was active in debate, band, orchestra, and was drum major in her senior year. She was a member of the type team, and played clarinet in the band and bass violin in the orchestra. She graduated from high school in 1937 and received a music scholarship to Weber College, where she graduated in 1939.
Madge worked at J.J. Newberry’s in Ogden after school and on Saturdays while attending Weber High and Weber College, and was placed as a service representative for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company. She also worked for Safeway Corporation and as a legal secretary for several Ogden law firms.
She married Donald Smith Griffin on August 28, 1941, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they raised four sons and two daughters. She loved Don deeply and had greatly missed him since he passed away in 1991.
Madge’s family was everything to her. She spared no effort in nurturing and supporting her children. She was an excellent cook, and took great delight in preparing delicious meals for family gatherings.
Madge was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as teacher, chorister and counselor in the Primary, Sunday School and MIA in the Ogden 6th, Highland, and 41st Wards. She and Don particularly loved their service as ordinance workers in the Ogden Temple for four years.
Madge had a special ability to care for the needs of others, and was well known for her homemade bread and other baked goods which she prepared and delivered to numerous friends and neighbors. She had a pleasant smile for everyone and an engaging sense of humor expressed through her infectious laugh.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Ann (Griffin) Ord, Cottage Grove, OR; Louise (Griffin) Mueller, South Weber; three sons, Dennis Donald Griffin, Lehi; Alan Fowles Griffin, Kaysville; and Brian Charles Griffin, North Ogden. Madge is responsible for 98 descendents, including six children, 34 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.
Madge’s brother, LaVell C. Fowles and sister, Eloise Manning Heninger, both passed away many years ago. She was also preceded in death by her husband Donald, and her son, Bruce James, who died in October of 2007.
A special thanks from the family to Debbie Roest and staff from Hospice for Utah, and the staff at Manor Care for their loving care of Madge.
